How to Extend DJI Mini 2 Remote Control Range

How to Extend DJI Mini 2 Remote Control Range

Thanks to Ocusync 2, DJI Mini 2 drones have an incredibly long, 10KM control range. Given that here in Europe, it is legally required to always fly the drone with a VLOS, it is very unlikely the flying range to be an issue. But still, can the this distance be improved?

There is at least two legitimate cases when we may wish to boost the drone control range - environments with high interference or when you want to decrease flyaway chances.

How Does It Work?

As you know, drones use wireless communication. For example, DJI Mini 2 can operate on two different frequencies 2.4Ghz and 5.8Ghz. This happens using radio waves. In turn, radio waves can be boosted or amplified. This is exactly how the remote control range of your drone can be extended.

Meet Signal Boosters

There are several kinds of signal boosters for your drone. You will frequently see those like mini parabolic antennas. However, my favorite is the Yagi antenna.

Yagi Antenna

Yagi antenna was invented in 1926 by Shintaro Uda and Hidetsugu Yagi at Tohoku Imperial University, Japan. It’s a very clever and at the same time simple invention. I often get asked by non-tech friends. Does the Yagi antenna really work? Boy, if it did not work, would we see so many on rooftops?

Which One Should You Get?

Tech-savvy users can even build Yagi antenna on their own? But why hassle when you can get really good Yagi antennas for your DJI Mini 2 for less than $20?

For example a Yagi antenna from O’woda (shown on the photo) is a really good one. You can get it for around $17 on Amazon.

One thing to keep in mind is that Yagi antennas (at least those I know of work for 5.8Ghz signal only. However, in some places 5.8Ghz may be prohibited (and thus your DJI Mini 2 will use 2.4Ghz). In this case, the Yagi antenna is not usable for you.

What Can You Expect?

You can expect around 10% boost in signal strength. This may not always translate into 10% increase in control distance. As I said above, you may never hit the DJI Mini 2’s control distance. However, in environments with high noise, this 10% boost can be quite significant. It can save from flyaways and this sub-$20 investment will pay off several times. So, I recommend to get one.
